Betaine is widely found in plants and animals. In plants, wolfberry and leguminous plants contain betaine. The molasses of sugar beets is the main source of betaine. Among animals, molluscs such as octopus, cuttlefish, and shrimp, as well as vertebrates, including humans, contain betaine in the liver, spleen, and amniotic fluid

Betaine is a quaternary ammonium alkaloid, chemically known as N,N,N-trimethylglycine, first discovered in beetroot in the 19th century. As an important methyl donor, it plays an important  role in the methionine cycle, osmoregulation, and lipid metabolism within organisms, and is widely found in animals, plants, and microorganisms. Since the 1940s, betaine has been used as an additive in livestock and aquaculture feed, and recent studies have revealed its significant health benefits for humans.
